We recently embarked on a family outing to the Wisconsin State Fair, and there are plenty of things to share with the group to prepare anyone for their experience. There are always ways to save on admission, and some will require some pre-planning or packing. Be sure to review the Fair’s website to track down the best option for you!
Arriving at the Fair
To kick off our visit, we decided to park at the conveniently located race track. At only $15 for parking, it was an affordable and hassle-free option. As you head towards the fair, you will see plenty of families offering up a spot in their grass, but a lot of the prices were the same, and some even more expensive than just parking at the Fair lot. There is always free street parking, but it’s just a bit of a walk by the time you find a good spot.
You are able to carry in water bottles, which is highly suggested since most of the days are hot summer days. With a toddler along for the trip, you’ve got the ability to pack some items for them in the diaper bag as well. The best thing we bring with us is the Wonderfold Wagon. This has been one of our favorite purchases, but with the tray accessory, it really comes in handy at the fair so your kids have a nice spot to sit and eat while you walk around.
The Animals!
Our first stops were touring the animal barns, a paradise for our animal-loving toddler. As we wandered through the barns, our toddler was extremely excited as he got up close and personal with cows, sheep, goats, pigs, bunnies, and horses. As the farmers saw he excited he was, he got a few invites to pet the cows and other animals, which was his favorite part. Just be sure to watch their hands, as not all the animals are there to be touched, and definitely should not be fed. There are plenty of barns to walk through, so this took up a good chunk of time by the time he was ready for something new.
If your kid is old enough, the racing mini pigs are always a favorite. Located by the big slide, you’ll find bleachers around the tracks and several shows throughout the day.
Thrills at the Big Slide
One of the highlights of the day was undoubtedly the iconic big slide. Our two-year-old was in heaven riding the slide, and we must admit, we had a blast too! For $4 per rider, it’s a great way to take a break from the animals and enjoy the climb. Be sure to take the kid’s pictures in the cut-outs at the bottom to remember the event. Keep in mind, this is not located by the midway. Over the last few years with our toddler at the fair, we have not gone to the midway and haven’t needed to as there are plenty of things for entertainment outside of that area.
Satisfying Our Taste Buds
After walking around for a bit, we had worked up quite an appetite. Luckily, the fair never disappoints when it comes to food options. We did some homework on toddler-friendly foods, but that went out the window once we saw the corn on the cob from Lions. Dipped in butter with some salt was the fan favorite, and after two ears, it was time to find our next stop.
Next up were the Reuben tater tots from Knuckleheads. The toppings were a delightful twist on a classic favorite, with nacho cheese underneath the sauerkraut, thousand island dressing, and corned beef. But perhaps the most surprising winner was the dill pickle pizza from Rick’s Pizza by the grandstand. Who would have thought that pickles and pizza would have tasted so good?
Of course, there are loads of other food options at the fair, but when you’re visiting with a toddler there isn’t as much time to snack. The Saz’s sampler platter is always a treat, McGinns has had good dishes over the years, and always be on the lookout for the Sporkie awards for the best new dish each year.
Don’t Forget Cream Puffs
As the sun began to set and it was getting closer to bedtime, we knew it was time to start heading for the gates. But before we left, we couldn’t resist stopping by the cream puff stand. We grabbed a box of three to go, which gave us treats the next day to enjoy.
We’ll be back at the Wisconsin State Fair!
Our visit to the Wisconsin State Fair was truly a day to remember. Our toddler had a blast, which made every moment worth it. We encourage all families to take a day each summer to enjoy the fair – whether it’s exploring the animal barn, conquering the big slide, or savoring unique fair foods. These are the moments that create cherished memories, and we can’t wait for our next family adventure.
