Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

During our recent stay at Glacier Canyon Lodge, we traveled across the parking lot to Monk’s. We chose to drive, although it would be walkable in summer, or the Wilderness resort shuttle will take you over there. Here’s our Monk’s Bar & Grill at the Wilderness Review.

The restaurant is HUGE. There’s a whole bar area with tables, then a large dining room on the other side with a combination of booths and tables. There is also a large patio for outdoor dining in the warmer months. We ate in the dining room, which had plenty of entertainment for our toddler with Monkey decorations everywhere, TVs every way you looked, and lots of activities with people coming and going.

We had a great meal, excellent service, and some nice beers to go with it. Monk’s were very kid-friendly, and he was entertained enough that we could enjoy another drink after dinner to relax on our vacation.

The 4.5 stars aren’t because it’s the top steak restaurant out there, but because if you’re looking for a burger, some beers, and a kid-friendly restaurant, this would be top of the list in this area for us.

Service

The staff was attentive right when we arrived, and we were immediately seated. A person I assume was the manager was also at the front and gave us a kind greeting and a very positive attitude. Once seated, our server arrived right away and took our drink and toddler’s orders so we could get moving quickly. This was much appreciated as he was already past his usual dinner time. Drinks came out quickly, food came out quickly, and any time we needed something, our server was already stopping by. Great service.

Food

The standard theme for our toddler is trying mac and cheese at whatever restaurant we visit, which did not disappoint. It came out quickly so he could start, and it was not a basic boxed serving. He and we enjoyed it as we snuck in bites waiting for our food.

As for the burgers, we had one of the Ultimate Monster Burger and a Black & Bleu Burger.

Burgers rarely compete for one of the top spots on our list, but the Monster Burger may enter the top 3. This massive burger had all the toppings and lived up to the description on the menu. Yes, we were full halfway through, but it was so good that the entire burger was finished. We would highly recommend ordering this on your visit. It wasn’t called our right in the burger list at first glance, but we noticed it on the side of the menu in case you missed it.

The Black & Blue burger was delicious but not as game-changing as the Ultimate Monster Burger. The Cajun seasoning was great, and there was the right amount of other ingredients, like blue cheese, to compliment the overall taste. The burger was filling, and there wasn’t room for more food after this meal.

We all had the fries as a side, which was better than average, nothing mind-blowing.

On a return trip, we had another monster burger and the bbq burger. The bbq burger was good, with smoked brisket and bbq sauce on top of the burger patty. If you’re a bbq fan, this would be the way to go to get the mix of flavors and enjoy a burger at the same time.

Drinks

We were able to enjoy four beers while we were at Monk’s. We had to try the beers made for Monk’s, the ’47 Amber Ale, and the Funky Monkey IPA. The Amber was light and better than a standard domestic, so we’d suggest trying this out if that’s your preference. The IPA was alright, more on the lighter side with some hoppy taste. I’m a big fan of juicy/hazy IPA so this only rated as a 3.75 on untappd. For the second round, we went with cans of local beers, the Gunpowder from The Brewing Projekt (Eau Claire, WI), and the other we both forgot :). The Gunpowder was delicious (a 4.25 on untappd for me).

The beer menu is excellent for a restaurant that doesn’t focus on craft beer, which was appreciated.
